The Department of Physics at the University of Kashmir would like to welcome you to our website. Our department is a community - of faculty, scholars, staff, students, and alumni - dedicated to excellence in education in general and excellence in physics education in particular. As we know, physicists study the properties and behaviour of energy and matter in a wide variety of frameworks, ranging from the sub-microscopic particles from which all ordinary matter is made, to the behaviour of the Universe as a whole. Physics principally is the science that deals with exploring the rules of nature and the fundamental understanding of nature.
The mission of the department of physics is to provide high-quality teaching and learning experience through our Master's degree and PhD program. Excellence in teaching has always been one of the main requirements of the department. We periodically review and reform existing courses and introduces new courses and programs geared towards the current research. Our department explores new dimensions in teaching and learning and uses various platforms and methodologies. The department is always in the continuing process of strengthening the existing programs.
The faculty members of the department carry out research in almost all the major areas of physics. The interests range from experimental to theoretical aspects of High Energy Physics, Nuclear Physics, Astrophysics, Condensed Matter Physics, Radiation Physics, Atmospheric Physics, Neutrino Physics, Nano Physics, and Quantum Computation. The faculty members collaborate with researchers at the pioneering institutes of the country like Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA), Pune, Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP), Kolkata, Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata, Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi, and many more. We have many international collaborations also which include CERN, Geneva, FAIR at Darmstadt, Germany, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the USA. The volume of research publications in peer-reviewed journals of repute and the research funding received by the department has been increasing steadily. Last but not least the faculty members of the department also make a significant contribution to administrative leadership and various institute activities and initiatives.
